Notations

Diffuser, 2021, Inkjet print of multimedia collage on paper, 21 x 29.7 cm

Performing as a translation between the aural and the visual, ‘Notations’ are a series of drawings and collages that present an alternative to conventional music notation. Composed with the intention of being read as music, they abstract conventional symbols and rules. Sounds become liberated, no longer constricted to the same categorisation of traditional notation. Instead, they invite indeterminacy. Allowing for improvisation, it is non-representational, prompting the reader into performing actions of their choice, and inviting open ended possibilities of interpretation.

Existing as aesthetic pieces of visual art, these notations possess the potential for transforming into sonic forms: functioning as visual maps for abstracted, anarchic sounds and compositions. Presenting opportunities to be performed sonically, they encourage collaboration and dialogue between artists and musicians, transforming form as they pass through materials and individuals. There are no instructions to describe how they should be read. Displaying a strong visual language, the works contain distinct sounds, but they do not talk. Transgressing conceptions, the notations emancipate sound from restrictive visual forms, liberating performers, encouraging free interpretation and the production of unconventional resonances and compositions.
